Travel without a DSLR but with a phone camera - possible or painful?

I would like to try going the whole way. No small point and shoot or mirrorless. Just a phone camera.

Did anyone with real DSLR experience try this? Were the limitations painful and frustrating, or could you adapt?

If one was to embark on something like this, which phone would give most acceptable result?
