Sony 10-18mm f/4 and 16-50mm Samples from NEX 7
Nov 15, 2012

I got to test out a NEX 7 and the 10-18 and 16-50mm. I posted samples on flickr at:

(6000x4000 shots should be available, let me know if you can't see them)

I warn you, these are boring sample shots

On the NEX 7:

The 16-50mm is fine for JPEG shoots or if you skip up to 18 or 19mm. Wider than that you must do corrections (either crop and/or distortion correction). It is like an 18-200mm though, don't look at formal reviews for this. Buy this lens because you want a compact size.

The 10-18mm f/4 is very sharp by f/7.1 across the frame and range even in extreme corners, but 10mm f/4 is a bit soft in the corners, better at f/5.6, and really good beyond that.

There is mustache distortion at 10mm (combination of barrel in the center and pincushion at the edges). There is also massive CA on the edges at f/4 and f/5.6 on the NEX 7. This might be better on other NEX cameras, but should be correctible. See the samples. There is a moderate strong magenta shift (again, probably corrected automatically with JPEG and probably not visible on 16 MP models).

This is a nice lens, uses filters, probably comparable to a Sigma 8-16mm or something (have to do a side by side to know for sure), very light weight and compact. I don't know why anyone would use an SLR wide on the NEX after this (this lens fits the NEX 7 very nicely, a Sigma 10-20 or something is very large and clunky when the adapter is figured in).

My mechanical complaint is it really isn't much better made than the 18-55mm or something and is expensive, but it is also an ultra wide with a nice f/4 max aperture across the range and works well with the 7.
