For the sort of small-group people shooting you describe I find the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 ideal (which is why I got one).  28mm is wide enough for a small group with some of their surroundings; at the other end, 75mm is long enough for a head-and-shoulders portrait and by f/3.5 the lens is very sharp and you still get reasonable oof backgrounds.  The 28-75 is a slightly odd short-telephoto range for normal walkaround shooting, but is great for what you describe.
