Travel without a DSLR but with a phone camera - possible or painful?

Look at the Canon G1X or other larger sensored p&s instead of a phone!  I do not carry my heavy hardware with me all the time but do use a smaller camera.  There are some GREAT, near pro quality non-DSLR cameras out there and they will all beat a phone!

I guess if where you are traveling is not that important . .  .   .     .
