Ironically...

I made the switch from the D700 to the 5DII because I wanted the 21mp's and at the time only Canon offered an affordable >20mp camera.
Ironically I stayed with the 5D III because 21/22 mp's is (finally) enough for what I do, and realistically the sweet spot between resolution, lens resolution, diffraction, iso performance, and speed performance.
The 5D III is a step up and a catch up move for Canon in terms of pro performance and quality. It seems Nikon has been cutting corners with it's D800, paint peeling, left AF problems, etc.
I dont think the D800 is built to the same quality and QA as the D700 was, and the 5DIII seems to be designed to a higher standard than the 5D/5Dii was.
So yes, the 5D3 is a better "all - rounder" in my opinion.
