Lens options for indoor/infant photography (D90)
Nov 14, 2012

Soon I'll be the overprotective father of a little girl. So I wanted to look into
getting a new camera lens (or two, if budget allows), esp for infant pictures.

My current set-up is:
- Nikon D90
- Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight Flash (just bought - so still learning)
- Everyday lens is Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5
- Also in the bag is Nikkor Zoom 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6

I know for indoor photography I'd be looking at something like 35mm or
50mm and f/1.4 or 1.8. Shooting indoors makes the 2/3 of a
stop on the 1.4 valuable, but then the price jumps significantly.
Also, there's the question on if I want to pick up a good macro lens for
shots of little hands, ears, feet, etc. And since wife/in-laws will be shooting
pics with my camera as well, I want something that is easy AF - so can't have
a lot of manual adjustments to camera/lens need.

I don't mind dropping $350 on a good indoor lens; would love to grab both
lenses for $500 if at all possible. Also heard that with my Speedlight Flash, my
lens may be able to handle most of this (outside macro) halfway decently.
Know that with the D90 I have
some ability to save money with using older
AF Nikkor, AF-D and AF-I
glass - but haven't explored any of this in the past.
Since there's a hundred options from $200 to $1200, just wanted to get
some thoughts from those with a lot more experience than me.

Thank you all!
