Dimage 7 colour space -- Conflicting opinions.

Unfortunately what Barrie wrote is not true. The D7UG did NOT change the original camera's color space. This was well documented back in the day and I'm not sure why he continues to push this myth, as he has for so long.

Running your joeg's through DiVu is a necessary but worthwhile step.

The information I have from the magazine publisher David Killpatrick, who used to run the official Minolta Magazine and was very close to Minolta generally, is that upgrading replaced the Minolta colour space of the DiMage 7 with something "much closer to sRGB". Certainly I found the out-of-camera colour much changed after upgrading when imported directly into Photoshop..

However, my camera was upgraded by Minolta's own service agents at a cost of £100... it wasn't something I was permitted to do for myself. Indeed, the camera came back with a certificate to say that upgrade had been done officially, and that the warranty was still intact...

.... also a sheet of paper indicating the improved features of the firmware, including a statement that (IIRC) "the colour space has been regularised."... which I took to mean what David Killpatrick suggested it meant.

So, if I am wrong, David Killpatrick was wrong, too, which I don't think is very likely. Mr. Killpatrick was one of the first people in UK to be really genned-up on the whole matter of colour management in digital photography and magazine reproduction.... (which was what my camera was mostly used for.)

Note: I specifically saved off a set of pictures of scenes around my house and garden before the camera was dispatched for upgrade. This was done so that I could make the comparisons that later indicated the change in colour space had taken place..

This is NOT to say that the DIY download currently available performs the same changes to the camera's colour space as the upgrade procedure my camera had. I don't know for sure. It is just possible that it doesn't [?] But I would be surprised if that IS the case.

And, talking of cases, you tone is unfriendly, so I'd like you to get off mine. Thank you.
