In addition to AF confirm, it allows auto metering and aperture control. Particularly the auto metering is a major plus here. You can set the aperture on the lens, but aperture control means not only you can control it via the camera wheel but also allow the camera to control it automatically (S, P mode).
And also consider the reselling price. I think in the 2nd hand market, while very few is looking for this lens, much fewer is looking for this without the chip. I might be wrong though since this is only my observation without stat.
