GIF and other random natural patterns

While walking in the woods last Sunday I found some wacky and wonderful natural patterns and a passle of GIF.

This tree burned during the Station Fire of August 2009. It stood as a skeleton until 30 months later it snapped during a fierce winter wind storm and fell across a dirt access road. Eventually the forest service cut it up enough to push it off the road. The pattern of annular rings in the stump caught my eye.

Burnt, broken and cut

Another example of fires destruction, a manzaniita. The entire range of the Angeles National Forest is in a slow process of regrowth.

And finally, as indicated, a passle of GIF, or Gnats in Flight. It was difficult focusing on the swarming gnats in front of the more contrasting brush beyond so I focused manually. Just for fun.
