How to test a new (Ultra Wide) lens - Sigma 8-16mm?

Just got a brand new Sigma 8-16mm, Nikon mount. Impressive lens, I thought it was more or less the dimensions of my Tokina 10-17mm FE, it is so much larger. Not a bad thing at all!
Since I have heard stories about possibly miscalibrated lenses etc. and do not know if they are urban legends or real facts (if I am not wrong LensRentals R. Cicala wrote about the myth of "bad samples" last year or so).
Anyway I would like to find a fast and not too difficult way to test the lens. I have no test charts or similar, just a bookshelf with many volumes, maybe this is good for my purpose.
Any thoughts?
Thank you and ciao!
