Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate any guidance and will try out the things you say. As I have said, I am still mainly using auto mode because of a lack of understanding. Tell me though, do you use the digital zoom for maximum telephoto or do you use the teleconverter? I have read that teleconverter is better for distant wildlife? Trouble is I can't seem to activate it on mine!

An easy way to activate it is by assigning it to the "S" button see page 155 of manual (select T for teleconverter).
With each depression of S button teleconverter setting will cycle between off - 1.5x - 2x.
The teleconverter does not work in Auto mode so set the cam to P, T, A, M.
