How to SEE when using LiveView on D800 ?

I hadn't yet used LiveView with my D800, but this morning I tried it !

BIG PROBLEM: the object I was shooting was poorly lit, so I wanted to use my SB800 ! I used an aperture of f/9.5 to get a deep enough DOF, but the damn back LCD was totally black !

I checked by closing my aperture to f/2.8, and the scene got a bit more "visible", but not very much !

Is there a way to get a brighter view in LiveView ?

NB. As much as I remember, I didn't have this problem with my D700  !
