Yes I understand that lighting based on 60hz like -old- fluorescents can do this if you happen to shoot during the down time. Modern electronic ballasts operate at MUCH higher frequencies and I would hope modern CFL's aren't using magnetic ballasts anymore. I don't believe lamps like sodium vapor / metal halide and other types of arc lamps are subject to this, maybe they are? I know I'm very sensitive to 60hz flicker and never noticed it from anything other than old magnetic ballast fluorescents and CRT displays with low refresh rates.

And I know you have no way of knowing, but I have shot will all sorts of gear. Lots of ancient 4X5 film lenses in oddball shutters etc so I do understand exposure testing I do think this was simply a case of manufacturing tolerances stacking up in a bad direction. These are still mechanical devices even if they are filled with a bunch of electronics!
