Speaking strictly about street photography:
The lens best suited for the photographer is one that matches the character and personality of the photographer. Wide angle lenses work best close-up as was mentioned above, but it isn't a lens suitable to those unable or unwilling to shoot close.
As a general rule, the more shy one is, the longer the focal length should be. Where you think you stand on the line between shyness and friendliness will point you towards the right lens.
