Not sure what visible difference is on the lens itself. The new lens doesn't have aperture ring and also doesn't have the "screw" on the mount for auto focus.

The "272" may be the older version compared to the F004 version announced at Photokina.
The newer lens is designed to fit/work on AF-S cameras like the D5100/D3100 with VR.

The "272" version has a great reputation as a value lens if you understand the difference from the Nikon AF-S VR 85 3.5 or Nikon 105 2.8.

The way I see it, if you want to spend $100 extra on the Nikon, go for it. If you want to save get the Tamron. If you can wait for sometime in 2013 for the 004 Tamron to be released in the USA,go for that.

Another choice on a DX camera may be to try the little 40 2.8 for $279.
