An interesting story about Sandy and a Prius
Nov 13, 2012

There's an interesting story about hurricane Sandy and a guy that owns a Prius over on priuschat.

The deal is this.  When Sandy was projected to hit, this guy installed a 1000W inverter into his Prius and filled its tank with gas.  When the power went out, he ran an extension cord inside his house from his Prius and ran his refrigerator, a small space heater, some lights, an X-box and a few other things.  He maxed out at about 1100W from his inverter, but probably ran a little less most of the time.  Call it 800W as a guess.

He had to run this way for a little over 4 days, 18 hours a day while Sandy had the power out.  During that time his car would start every 13 minutes and run for 1 minute and 20 seconds.  Over the entire time, he used 7 gallons of gas.  In fact, he was left with enough to drive a few days after the power came back on and they were suffering with gas shortages.

If you work the math, that means the Prius, batteries and inverter together were averaging something like 25% efficiency.  To give you an idea, a regular 5000W generator running at 1000W would have an efficiency somewhere under 10%.  Even a 1000W generator would be 15% or less at that power level.

Of course, you could do this with any car you can leave idling.  But how many cars could idle for 18 hours a day for 4 days on 7 gallons of gas?  How many could do it on an entire tank of gas?  Not many.
