I bought a used 100 f/2.8 Canon macro. It does not have IS but in good light you can use shutter speeds fast enough to get very good results if you have a steady hand, or you can brace yourself against a tree, fence or something, or use a tripod. I do a lot of macro indoors by bringing flowers in from the garden, slow moving bugs even, in a container with some leaves/grass. Look up Bryan Petersons video tutorials on you-tube. There is also a site, I think it's called "Try My Shot. com". Of course the lens can be used as a normal prime. I sometimes use it for tight landscapes.Maybe that's not everyones cup of tea, but I like it. Macro is a very precise art, the margin for error in focusing is very small at 1:1 & it can be quite frustrating, but being able to see the hairs on a spiders legs when you can barely see the legs with the naked eye is a real thrill. [unless you hate spiders that is!!! lol] Others may suggest alternatives to a dedicated macro lens, it is a matter of budget usage & personal choice.
