I'm not sure this is such a big deal. My RX100 is the first occasion I have experienced focus peaking and frankly, it's a very approximate guide at best when the view is not magnified (set to Low/Red). When used with the lens fully open / wide angle and without magnification, it cannot be used determine critical focus alone by a long way.

With the lens wide open, longer focal lengths and more distant subjects, the range of objects highlighted is still significantly front and back of the actual focus point, so my conclusion has been that peaking without magnification is more like a zone focus tool than anything else. That might work fine in some situations but not for the work I tend to do.

I continued to use peaking for a while with magnified MF (where it's a lot better, though still a little vague) but in the end I just relied on the superb magnified view to really get the critical focus exactly where I wanted it and turned the peaking off as it was a distraction. I now like to have the magnified view continue indefinitely while I set the focus, and I like it a lot. For everything else, AF does a great job.

Under what conditions would someone here regard non-magnified peaking as being your only focusing guide? Do you get the critical focus right every time with this method and if so, how?

Perhaps I am missing something?
