Re: What Speedlight are YOU using with your D600?

I started with the SB-600 and found its power wasn't enough outdoors beyond about 5 feet so I went to the SB-900. A bit better, but outdoors still wasn't enough power and the CLS doesn't respond well for me where I shoot in bright sunlight. You are right thinking wireless would be a better option and might be able to position the lights closer to the subject where they may not see the Commander flash or just not sync up as mine often do in the desert sun (I suspect the sensors are blinded, but dunno, just an annoying trait unless I go wireless with them.).
Sadly, all the Nikon units have been retired unless I am shooting indoors which is not my normal venue. I need to get up to around f/11 or even more outdoors (desert and bright sun) at a distance with light modifiers and I have to use 1200ws-1800ws studio units to do so along with wireless units. So this is where I am often at:

This rig gets me up to f/32 at times (out to 25' too) so it makes "my own soft Northern light sun" and I can then use the sun as a specular fill light.

Due to my location, I am more into "power" than not having enough so I error to having far more than less. I can always dial or diffuse the above down, but not up if the flash gear cannot supply me with the lumens I often need for outdoors in the desert. If I favored shooting indoors then an on-camera unit with i-TTL might suffice.
Nice part of "having max. power" even indoors is that should there be an open window in the scene, I can get up to around f/11-/f/16 or so and then the window and outdoors aren't blown out on the histogram. This was with the above large black lights moved indoors at f/11 and you can see out the window where the exposure is normal for outdoors and not blown out nor the need to play around with it in PS to fix the over-exposure that normally occurs:

Go for the power, unless you are into macro and confined spaces.
