Focus peaking on the RX1 in the showroom did NOT activate on both DMF and MF unless magnification was enabled. I dived into the menus and settings found no way to change this, and the staff confirmed what I suspected that focus peaking does not work on the RX1 in the showroom unless magnification assist was enabled, unlike how it currently works on the Nex series.

I asked them to confirm with Sony HQ about this and get back to me by email, and that was the email they sent me today (I visited sony showroom on Sunday).

As for google translate, well, it is only google translate. I haven't attempted to copy and paste it in google translate because I have a near native level of Japanese proficiency, and I can understand what the staff said in the email without relying on google translate. If you choose not to believe that, well, unfortunately I can't really think of a convincing way to convince you maybe some other member here who has a good level of proficiency in Japanese can vouch for the meaning of the text written in that email.

Thanks, Brandon. I don't question the the information you received, or your experience, as I mentioned before, though it's pretty incredible (and unsettling) to me.

Sony's history with firmware updates is not confidence inspiring. I was really fooled by the massive NEX update (the one that included peaking) into thinking they were perhaps a more responsive company in this regard. I'm grateful for the little NEX-7 tweaks the delivered after a whole year, but a little underwhelmed. I expected much more to be squeezed out of this hardware a few months after release.

Sony is really bad communicating with its customers, and that is such a lost opportunity. Sony at sonylistens might be listening, but they really aren't saying very much.

Their saving grace is awesome hardware.

to be a early adopter, and i agree on the remark *Sony's history with firmware updates is not confidence inspiring* sometimes they fix it, but it can take a longtime before they do so if...

this is the reason why i alway's wait before i purchase a new camera.
