The single biggest issue with m4/3s sharpness is people stopping down way too much because that is what they would do with full frame.

Simply put. Almost all M4/3s lenses are sharpest within 1 stop of wide open. The 14-42 is the only one I can think of that isn't sharpest within 1 stop and that is a pretty poor lens in my opinion.

The amount of sharpness gained by stopping the majority of m4/3s lenses down simply isn't worth it. Try shooting these lenses wide open sometime. They actually are quite impressive.

It is actually funny that the 20mm is considered to be one of the best m4/3s lenses wide open. It does sharpen up at F2.2-F2.5 but it is just fine at F1.7. So many of the recent lenses(25mm F1.4, 45mm F1.8, 12mm F2.0, 35-100mm F2.8...etc) are even better wide open than the 20mm is and that is saying a lot.

I see what you mean but there are some exaggerations here.

First, while it's true about many of the zooms that they need not and should not be stopped down a whole lot to do their best, the faster lenses usually do not peak until at least a couple of stops from wide open.

Second, the lenses that you mention aren't sharper than the 20/1.7 wide open. If anything, it is the other way around. See here for example:

The 20mm really doesn't look that great wide open against the 14-140mm in the dpreview tests below. They don't have any test results for the lenses I listed. However, in my observations those lenses are a lot closer to the 14-140mm than they are to the 20mm lens wide open.

The 20mm sharpens up considerably at F2.0.
