What do I need?

First of all, hello!
I am new to the world of Astrophotography, but been an avid photographer for almost two decades now.
I recently purchased a Sony NEX 6, a Celestron T Adapter, and the T Mount adapter for the camera as well. Don't make fun, but the scope I currently have is the Celestron FirstScope, as I didn't want to spend a fortune, and I purchased the kit with accessories for $40.
My questions are these:
1. I can't focus to the point where I can get objects to be in focus. Is this due to not using a Barlow?
2. I want to go deeper eventually, but for now I want to see what I can do with this scope and setup. What can I see with the FirstScope, realistically?
3. In the future, I plan to get an Celestron NexStar 6SE, would this be sufficient enough to see some galaxies etc?
Thanks for any help!
