I want to thank everybody for the very good and detailed info.

Now the "bad" part:

almost everybody suggested OM-D/GH3 cameras.

questions:

1) $1000 ???? $2100 gives you a FF nowadays!!! I thought MFT (given the smaller sensor) were supposed to be cheaper than APS-C cameras... I guess I need to find out why the amazing price... maybe I'll start a new thread about it....

2) The reason these cameras were suggested is because they are weather sealed, or is there some other reason? do I really need a weather sealed cam? I understand the problem with dust for lenses, but is this a real problem with cameras too?

The reason responders suggested only m4/3 equipment was because of the title of your thread which was is MFT good enough and the answer was yes and this is a m4/3 forum.

While the $1000 for an all metal weatherproofed EM5 body may sound high to you it is not more expensive than an equivalent metal bodied APS-C camera from CanNik and the same equivalent focal length lenses are smaller and lighter. The very fine colloidal dust on East Africa safaries will find its way into most camera bodies unless they are tight. I prefer metal bodies for sturdyness and dependability because with my multiple SLR, DSLR cameras I have at one time or another in my haste managed to drop them to either concrete or hard ground without any damage other than smashed filters.

In my reply I suggested an inexpensive APS-C alternative I use for my wildlife photography keeping both overall size and cost to a minimum. I would suggest use of either K5 or Kx/K30 Pentax with IBIS and sturdy weatherproofed bodies. If one is on a budget for minimal size I love the Pentax 50-200 zoom lens or FF Tamron 28-300 (42-450mm equivalent reach) and the inexpensive legacy lenses are stabilized. The 18-250mm super zooms with wider range are another small alternative lens but they cost about $500+ and are slower and less sharp at the tele end. My Kx outfit with small tele cost me only $600 so you don't have to break the bank.

Irregardless the EM5 and GH3 are also excellent alternatives. Also not mentioned that with the EVFs on m4/3 you see what your exposures will be and the live view off your LCDs is much faster than on APS-C or FF camera bodies I think?
