Just wondering what you guys think.

Have we reached a point where the old motto "worry more about glass than bodies" has been rendered obsolete ?

I'm starting to think so... see if you agree.

Of course we can use all F mount lenses ever produced, and that's a wonderful feature, but when you think about it, is that really so?

How many here buy a modern DSLR and keep using 1960's glass? Glass without VR, no AF, and no special coatings at all...?

Really, how many actually do that?

All that I see is the exact same thing that happens to newer bodies, happening to lenses.

Whenever Nikon releases a new version of a lens, people buy it.

50 1.4 D > G

28-70 D > 24-70 G

70-200 G > 70-200 II G

85 1.4 D > G

etc etc etc, ad infinitum.

Every single feature is reason enough to say you need a new lens.

D to G, nano-coatings, VR I to II, extracting juice from higher MP bodies, the list is endless...

The same ol' upgrade itchy, except that maybe, instead of buying bodies every 4 years, you may buy lenses every 5, 6 or 7 years.

But the upgrade syndrome is exactly the same.

On the other hand, people are more and more feeling that they reached Nirvana with their bodies, and do not need anymore to upgrade them.

D3X, D600, D800 (and to a lesser extent, D700) owners are pretty much happy for years to come.

Some say confidently that the D800 is their last body for at least a decade.

Wow, longer life cycle than your last lens purchase!

What you guys think about it? Do we have a new motto?

Cheers

I shoot with many old AF-D primes and fail to see real reason why I should get the G variants when I am getting what I want from what I have. Old professional glass holds up extremely well on the D800. What is wrong with the 85mm 1.4 for example, that makes it a dog now the G is out? Sure the G autofocuses faster, but my portrait shots are people standing still - so for what I use it for the upgrade is useless, yeh it's better with flare etc, so? I like flare - I use to to great affect. It's slightly sharper the G version...slightly, but the D800 made my AF-D 85 sharper anyway - I'm happy. I actually prefer the bokeh on the Af-D version!

If you are getting what you want you won't upgrade. If you love gear you may do it just for that but that's your choice.

The problem is alot of people think just because a new version exists the old one they used to hold in high regard as being a great lens is suddenly a dog; I for one do not understand their logic.
