I would suggest that the 50mm might be a great lens to use full time for a while--really explore what that focal length and lens speed can (and can't) do for your photographs.  There is a good, short article about building and using a DSLR system at the link below.  Pages 2 and 3 explain the benefits of starting with a fast, normal lens and provide some simple "projects" to help learn your system.  The succeeding pages suggest needed accessories and the sequence of trying other focal lengths. http://photo.net/equipment/building-a-digital-slr-system/
