NEX6: Does the PDAF feature only work when in continuous auto focus?

Just curious.  My NEX6 is brand new and as also a m43 user, I have no concept (yet) of PDAF...Just learning.  I see where I can show the PDAF points on the LCD, but I had assumed that PDAF was nevertheless "on" all the time....
