...and it goes without saying (doesn't it?) that, when shooting dialogue/specific audio, the mic must be as close to the source, and furthest away from the camera, as possible without appearing in shot.
For CUs, use a boom. For wide shots, use a wireless lapel.
Regard the onboard mic as a means to record memos to yourself - no more!
