First DSLR - Suggestions

As I use Canon I can only comment on that make. T3i is a nice well spec'd camera, the articulating screen I found very handy. As for the lens, the older version of the 18-135 was not very well liked, the later model seems much better but will be more expensive. Don't dismiss the kit lenses, 18-55 IS & 55-250 IS are good value & are far better optically than their price would suggest, just make sure they are the image stabilized ones if you go for them. I am sure there are equally good reasons for choosing the D5100.
