If you increase either lens resolution or sensor resolution with a new and better product - you get more image resolution

With the recent Nikon MP increase from mainly 12 MP to 24/36 MP the quick way to more image resolution short term is a higher MP body, though getting a higher MP lens as well is even better

On the other hand 12 MP is good enough for good 16x12 inch prints - which is more than enough for most amateur photographers.

I do not see a need to buy 36 MP unless you intend to print 30 inches wide and to view at 15 inches or maybe to crop heavily; or to buy a 300 f2.8 to photograph static subjects in bright light at f11 from a tripod.
