First DSLR - Suggestions

Am planning to buy a entry level DSLR in this month and my budget is within $1000. I'll be mostly shooting people and occasionally nature.

I'm looking to buy either Canon or Nikon and i've shortlisted Canon T3i, T4i, 60D and Nikon D5100.

I would prefer to buy a lens which would fulfill most of my needs and prefer not to carry more than one lens at a time For this criteria Canon T4i looks good with 18-135 STM, but it is a bit stretch for me on Budget.

Also, i've little information about Nikon DSLR's. Can you please help me understand the difference between D5100 and T3i/T4i? Which one would fit my budget with good lens covering most of my needs.

From cost perspective, i can see a lot of deals going on currently with T3i including kit lens (18-55). But i want to buy a DSLR with better/faster lens and am not inclined towards kit lens. Would it be better to just buy T3i body + good lens to fit most of my needs? Can you please suggest me some options?
