Herbie, I found a prompt in the manual (I believe) that you turn the camera on, then turn on the EF42 once it's mounted in the hot shoe; then the communication between camera and flash syncs up.

I don't have an HS, but on the X10 and XS-1, I can leave it mounted on the camera, turn the camera off, the flash turns off with it; turn the camera back on (having left the switch on on the flash) and the flash powers right up with.  It may work the same on an HS.

BTW, rechargeable AA's (Sanyo Eneloops or whatever you prefer) work great, faster than alkaline AA's, and you only buy them once !
