Yea I rarely used my 50/1.7 at larger than f/2.4 where the bokeh does smoothen out, but by then the aperture is close to a zoom lens so what's the point...
No, I meant that bokeh gets much better at f/2 or f/2.2. It just has harsh edges at f/1.7, but stopping down even a tiny bit cuts that off.
Yes that's exactly what I meant. My wording wasn't clear. I only stop down to about f/2.4 where the bokeh is nice and smooth despite the shape. Anything larger (ie. f/1.7-2.0) is ugly and I hate it. Here's a favourite shot of mine @ f/2.4: http://www.flickr.com/photos/davie_t/4580820327/
Veiling is crazy at large apertures. Contrast would be so low that colours would smear into each other. I confirmed this with my buddy's copy as well, no filters of course, across numerous cameras.
At f/1.7, and looking at the corners, yes. However, everything is pretty much fine near the center of the frame. You do see a little veiling if you shoot a brick wall or building at f/1.7 in bright daylight, but I don't find that distracting. Besides, it's not too hard to stop down a bit in that situation.
Just so you don't think I'm crazy, I searched for other people's examples of this veiling and here are some extreme examples:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/anadah/5553879282/in/photostream/ -around the dog's nose.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ivan_oo/7987630340/in/photostream/-around her hat, arms, the rusted wall. I don't think it's caused by his editing... but we'll never know
Also, I don't see the fringing problems. There's pretty much no CA.
Yes there's very little of the easy to remove green/red Chromatic Aberation, but there is a lot of the pink fringing (different from purple fringing) that plagues many Minolta lenses. This kind of fringing is too much trouble to even attempt to remove. People who shoot concerts and harsh lighting conditions will know what I'm talking about.
Can you show an example of the pink fringing? I've used the lens in difficult stage lighting and plenty of harsh lighting conditions (including nearly no light). The 'glow' from shooting at f/1.7 and cropping very, very heavily can be a problem, but then you should be using a telephoto in that situation.
I know this "pink fringing" I speak of can sometimes be classified as longitudinal CA, most old Minolta lenses suffer from this. But other times it happens at the edges of bright highlights, similar to purple fringing.
http://thequietrevolution.ca/davet/image/dpreview/5017ca.JPG -this is a crop to illustrate my point. Notice the man is only slightly out of focus, causing the fringing around the highlights.
http://thequietrevolution.ca/davet/image/dpreview/DSC00483.JPG -around her left hand, all the way up to the top of the guitar. And of course the veiling around the microphone.

The 50/1.4 is definitely better, but is several times more expensive.
I got mine for only twice as much as my 1.7 cost And I don't mean to offend any people who like their 1.7's. I'm weird in a way that I am VERY particular about the "character" of lenses, and I just don't like that of the 50/1.7.
