First DSLR - Suggestions

I was looking at a deal rite now about D7000 with 18-105 VR lens for $1100. I've no idea if this is a good deal or not. Can you help me with this?

For that matter even T4i with 18-135 STM would come up close to same price. Also, it has fully articulated LCD with touch screen. How useful will be that fully articulated LCD? D5100 is currently also offered in many deals for very good price, which i believe has articulated LCD, but with 18-55 lens.

I've heard and read very good reviews about Nikon, but i've also read it is complicated to work with and expensive to buy add on lens.
