Why 'Stops' for exposure?

You can build all the full stop values by multiplying or dividing by two ( including f-numbers as two interleaved sequences ).

That's an operation anyone can do without any aid.  So why would we desert this in favor of a "system" that replaces than with arbitrary values.  Keep in mind that intermediate values are not easy to calculate for a human and as they're not linear they're not intuitive.

Sure, the camera can do the math, but for humans it's just asking for larger errors than using full stops will give anyway.
