For the umpteenth time... It's a hard concept to grasp for some reason.

The number denominates the version of the lens, NOT the VR. In order for there to be a VR III, there would first have to be a "17-35" VR, then a "17-35VR" II and then a "17-35VR" III.

Each lens has a different VR, they don't give a version number to the VR system, only to lenses.

SixDasher, I'm not sure that you are correct. Take a look at some of Nikon's long glass. There is no Nikon 500mm f/4 VR I, just a VR II - denoting the second VR system and NOT the second version of the the 500 f/4 VR lens. Nikon had many other 500 f/4 lenses before the VR II version came out.

With that said, it might be different for some of the shorter glass. I don't know. Just thought I would throw that out there.

I did notice that the new 70-200 f/4 isn't a VRIII, it's just denoted as VR, so I see your point. Maybe Nikon isn't consistent with their naming scheme?
