So my question to those who have upgraded - Have you noticed an improvement in work?

A little about what I shoot. I shoot mostly slice of life and events. I occasionally shoot some landscapes but it is life I try capture. I rely heavy flash. I always keep an SB400 in my pocket und usually have an SB900 or a Quantum Trio mounted on my camera. I prefer flash over available light but there are circumstances when I find ASA 3200 & 6400 and available light the only way to make the shot.

I am currently working with a D700 and D300. I find the D700 gives me abilities the D300 cannot provide however I ask my self will a new D800/600/4 make me a better photographer. Am I missing shots my D700/300 cannot make that I would be able to get with Nikon's recent offerings. My D700 only has about 35,000 actuations and my D300 has just under 50,000 actuations so I believe both cameras have lots life.

I shoot sports/action so when I upgraded to a D3s, yes, I noticed a considerable improvement over my then top camera, the D300. Greater high ISO capability coupled with full frame fit to my lens made a significant difference. The ability to shoot at ISO6400 and 1/500 was a huge boon.

I shoot a lot of events as well - awards, professional receptions... that sort of thing. I use supplementary flash when needed, but I'm a bit surprised that you're depending so heavily on flash for photojournalistic style "slice of life" shots given the general desire to be less intrusive. A D4/800/600 would enable you to rely less on flash because if their tremendous high ISO capability and therefore allow you to be less obvious.

If you really prefer flash in most situations, then no, I'd say the D700/300 combo you have will likely serve your needs for some time to come. You'd probably be better off investing in lens if you don't have a fixed f2.8 lens or faster.
