I like the size of the lens in combination with my V1. Not to small and not to big, just right for the way I hold the camera.
I just checked the full frame nikkor 50/1.8 which is only 39mm and since it has a recessed front element, the optics are actually shorter. It might be that the lens is longer because of the VR.
