I can also tell you that, on my A57, if you are in A mode with no flash popped up and ISO too low (doesn't do it when on Auto ISO) it will do the same kind of noise making 'processing' thing.
Have you tried the new firmware update just in case something is corrupt driver-wise in the original?
Would anyone else on here with A57 please check their camera. If it is a bug then Sony need to be informed.

This sounds like long exposure noise reduction (I think anything longer then 1 second shutter activates it), this is where it does a second exposure with the shutter closed to work out 'hot pixels' which it then subtracts from the actual image..
Whilst it's taking the second shot, the anti-shake is operating which sounds like 'grinding'..
Look up "Long Exposure NR" in the manual, you can turn it off in the menu (Long exposure NR)..
This could well be the OP's issue as well, if you check the shutter speed in the situation you are describing that would easily rule this out..
