I think that Nikon have amply proven that they're quite good business managers, and are also able to do reasonably well with technology.

But, clearly, DSLRs are dying, the concept is just too obsolete for the digital age, and that's even before one mentions the inability to have AF while filming.

Nikon have put a toe in the mirrorless waters with the "1", but have been scared of using too large a sensor for fear of cannibalizing their DSLRs.

It doesn't mean that they were/are dumb: it means that they are earning very high margins on most of their DSLRs (low-end use very cheap components, high-end sell at a premium price), so it's a good business decision to NOT kill this when they are earning high returns.

I bet / hope that Nikon management are watching things very carefully, and will come up with a credible mirrorless camera (among other things) when this makes business sense. The Canon "M" must have made Nikon even more aware, but due to its slow AF they won't be panicking just yet.

As for you and the D5200: you and I know perfectly well that using this vs any DSLR you already own, will not make ANY difference to your photography. So you're better off NOT buying it, period. And given that it's a free world and no one forces you to buy it, why are you complaining?

What AntoineB wrote ( see above ) makes perfect sense to me.

Just want to add that he D5200 ( looks very promissing !! ) maybe is a perfect upgrade for people who have a Dx lens collection and want/need to upgrade or change their owned dslr body.  For "newcomers" indeed there is the question to anwer if the Dx dSLR with mirror is the way to go ...  the m4/3 solution is very tempting ...  on the other hand if one needs fast focussing, tracking moving objects etc. the higher end dSLR's with mirror ( see the D5200 improved AF system and metering sensor !! )  seems to be the way to go at this moment ( may change in the future ).

Personally I hope that Nikon will come with a mirrorless Dx system that is completely compatible with the existing Dx system to protect the investments a lot of nikon Dx users made in the past.

Greetings,
Marc
