Well there is the OVF power save mode in the set-up menu but it impacts autofocus speed.  You can run it without the back LCD coming on at all.  But the best thing to do is run the camera the way you want and have a couple of spare batteries along.  The after market ones are cheap.  Also I have heard that a new battery might not have the full capacity until it has been used a couple of times.  Also know that when the battery indicator shows anything other than fully charged, get ready to change the battery.  Short battery life is a typical complaint with this camera but what the heck, just have spares along.
