Apart from a few warmed over rereleases of Panasonic's press releases, there are no good objective third party reviews of the camera and its capabilities.

Hogwash. The OM-D hype started when it was still in the rumor phase, before any real details were known at all. Lack of knowledge has never stopped the vast majority on this forum from having, and loudly stating and re-stating, their opinions.

The reason why the launch of the OMD E-M5 attracted such a lot of discussion was:

  • it was a very capable and almost revolutionary device at its time of launch.
  • Olympus has a cadre of strong loyalists (aka fanboys) who felt the need to say something more often than having something to say.
  • The E-M5 and its lenses were quite widely available in stores very soon after launch.
  • Revolutionary? Only for Olympus. There's nothing in the OM-D that wasn't already available elsewhere. Pentax had multi-axis IBIS a long time ago. Panasonic had m43 cameras with built-in EVF, and high quality, 16 MP sensors. Yes, the Oly output is better, but as an evolutionary step, hardly revolutionary.
  • Fanboys? Definitely.
  • But the hype started long, long before launch, and before it was available in stores.

I agree, however, that splitting the forum won't work. The Oly fanboys will invade the Panasonic forum to scream that the GH3 is too big, the G5 too plastic, etc. To the true believers, anything that says Oly on it is a gift from the Gods, and anything that doesn't is second rate, at best.

The fanboys are really pretty funny. Before the OM-D came out, all they could say about EVFs was that they weren't really needed, and were better left as a detachable accessory. Then the OM-D came along, and all of a sudden the built-in EVF was the greatest advance in photography since the digital sensor. But they were never quite able to acknowledge that Panasonic did it years earlier.

And you impute fanboyism to others. Say no more...
