Oly's cheap lens caps, lack of included hoods (and lens pouches), and pricing on OEM hoods is certainly something to complain about. But I have no complaints with my 40-150. Light, small and as long as you don't push it all the way out to 150 is a very good performer. I suggest you give it a fair test and not judge it by its cover. Personally, I have never been bothered by plastic lens mounts and I worry a whole lot more about the performance of a lens than its appearance. Nothing wrong with plastic -- it is lightweight and durable. It may not appeal to you -- your money, your choices. I have no issue with folks deciding to spend more for better build quality, especially professionals and folks that do a lot of lens changing. But anyone calling the 40-150 junk is fool as far as I am concerned.

I didn't call the lens junk (though I would describe the rear cap as that). I guess I'm a bit old school and find plastic end-to-end a bit low-end, but of course I accept the 'horses for courses' argument.
Unless it turns out to be terrible IQ wise, which it doesn't so far seem the case, I'll hang on to it. It cost me £100 over the standard camera package and at that price vs the size/weight it's better to have it than not.
My original question was genuine - is the plastic fantastic?
