Perhaps this is just repeating what everyone else is saying, but I like a more pessimistic twist on it:

Shallow depth of field is not necessary for all situations. There are an infinite number of magnificent photos one can take without shallow depth of field.

However, there is also a place for it, and for certain situations, shallow depth of field is essential. In those situations, a Nikon 1 camera is not sufficient. I love my J1, but it does not replace my DSLR.
