Sony R1 (Sony's usual curate's egg, but I'm still using it at work many years on)

I had never heard this expression before, but it's great! Before I looked it up, I said to myself, that has to be a British English term...and voila, it was.

I was using the expression as it's commonly used, but actually feel the phrase 'curate's egg' should mean not just 'very good in parts' (as said by the curate who'd been given a rotten egg at dinner).  It should mean 'terrible' (though the Sony R1 was and is very good in parts but not terrible overall).

His was a polite (actually, over-polite) way of saying his egg was inedible, as even if it was good in parts, the overall experience of eating it was disgusting.
