I disagree with some of the negative comments about the Minolta 50mm f1.7. I used to use it quite a bit. The f1.4 has nicer bokeh, but it cost more too. That's what I use now.

I've shown these images many times in the past when someone asks about the Minolta f1.7:

All were shot jpg with the A-100 and all wide open (f1.7). This was early in my DSLR days, so processing wasn't as good as I could do now, but I think they give a good idea of the quality of the bokeh and sharpness wide open - which IMO, isn't bad for a $80 lens. And, it's also a full frame lens if you ever decide to move on from APS-C.

Question: What do you do all week?
Answer: Mon to Fri. Nothing, Sat & Sun I rest!

The 50/1.7 is a great lens for the price, in the $40-75 range, a fantastic value. It might be perfectly acceptable depending on what you want out of it/how large you're printing as well.

However, all of the other fast 50's in the system are better. It is what it is.
