Speed up Lightroom

I'm working with a high-end Thinkpad (system specs as of this morning below) with an Nvidia driver (driver specs below) driving an Asus HDMI 24" monitor. It all works well except in LR4.2 and PS CS5 it is _slow_. Is there any adjusting I can do to speed it up OR should I think about getting a more powerful desktop to do my photo editing (not the most desirable solution). Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

BTW I do strictly still image processing, no video.

Let ma also add I have run plenty of diagnostics, and the computer checks out fine.
