I agree that prior to the 35-100 there were no good candidates for a TC. But the 35-100 might work very well with one, and the announced 150 2.8 also.

The question, though, is whether cropping and enlarging through interpolation might not produce better results than an optical TC. I did some tests a few years back with an EOS 50D, a 70-200 f/2.8L, and Canon's matched 1.4 and 2x TCs.

I found that using Photoshop to enlarge the image produced very slightly better results (more detail, less loss of sharpness and contrast) than the 2X TC. The 1.4X was very slightly better than using Photoshop. In neither case was the difference very great, but electronic enlargement may be as good an option now as a TC.

Note that I didn't simply crop. I used software interpolation in PS (bicubic was the best, I think, but it's been a while). And there are probably more sophisticated algorithms available today.
