Indeed, I owned a 'Minolta Dimage 7' and a 'K-M Dimage A1' myself - I still have the 'D7'.

They were quite innovative - just like Fuji (SuperCCD, EXR, X-Trans etc) - but much like Fuji, they were a small player in the digital camera market, and they just couldn't make any money competing against the giants like of Nikon, Canon etc.

Sony, Samsung and Panasonic have far bigger profiles on the high street, due to their related consumer electronics products such as phones, TVs, and personal computers/components.

I certainly hope Fujifilm continue, to innovate, and prosper - but many big names have fallen by the wayside.

It's different depending on the company. Yes Sony, Samsung, Panasonic have big overdrafts and are unlikely to just die. Samsung have been a winner in consumer electronics (at the expense of Sony and Panasonic it has to be said), but have had very little traction in the digital camera market (NX has been a bit of a flop I think sales wise)

I'd wager Samsung might be leaving at some point

Other smaller players such as Ricoh/Pentax are probably under more pressure

As for Fuji I think they have unlike Kodak done "different stuff" and probably enough to ensure their survival, mistakes yes but decent stabs no question.

Fujifilm's existence is not threatened, but their camera division certainly is, unless it starts turning a profit.  They have lost money at least 4 years straight.  Fujifilm wont continue to carry such losses forever.  They NEED to turn it around some day.

I'm not sure Minolta couldn't have made a go of it, they were no.3 so it was more a Konica driven move and Sony's cheque book opened up nicely for them.
