traveling soon - compact camera choice

This question may belong in the beginners forum, but on other sites,I'm not find the info I'm looking for.  What I really want is a replacement for my Canon PowerShot SX110 IS.  I love this camera, but it's starting to make some funny noises.  It is 9MP, 10x optical zoom, and a tad too chunky for my pocket or purse for travel.  I've been looking at other Canons - (SX260 I think) but I don't need GPS.  What's important for me is:  size, battery life, picture quality and zoom, oh and good in low light wouldn't hurt.

Do you have suggestions?  I've been reading reviews and I confess to being a total Luddite in some areas.  Will be traveling to Italy at end of November, so need to make a decision soon.

BTW, I've been reading that point&shoot cameras are on their way out with the prevalence of smart phones.  I can't believe that, but then, I don't have a smart phone.  Thanks for your help!
