I have only the 28-70 and just last week the focus motor has begun to fail after 6 years of very light use. Mike, you are correct in that it is an expensive repair and it is a well known failure mode.

Both Mike and Rockwallaby have mentioned the propensity of the focus motor in the 28-70 to fail. I only wish I'd know that a few years ago when I bought mine.  I still love the lens and the images it produces, but as of about a year ago, focus is only accurate when the motor turns the lens in one direction.  As I use the lens mainly for people, I have gotten used to defocusing my "beast" to the good side prior to each shot.  You may laugh, but what the heck, it still works!  I will see what Nikon wants to fix it, as I would like to keep it.
